While Jane is visiting her sickly Aunt, Rochester visits Adele in the schoolroom and morosely wanders the moors while waiting for Jane to return. Rochester is lonely while Jane is at Gateshead (1996)įor the first time in my list, this is a scene that could have happened in the book. He basically tells Blanche off for wanting to marry for money, and while it is not kind, and definitely a little hypocritical when Rochester is deceiving someone he loves, I do like that he makes sure Blanche knows how he feels about her.

This scene didn’t exactly occur in the book, but it’s a more straightforward rendition of Rochester pretending to be a gypsy in order to cement the rumors that he doesn’t have money, so that Blanche will no longer be interested in him. Rochester points out to Blanche just what a gold digger she is. If I wanted to see Rochester as a sweet and gently earnest man, I would definitely want him to also be giving away puppies. However, this scene made my list because it’s Rochester. This is a scene that goes against every character perception one could have of Rochester - the Rochester of the novel just doesn’t seem caring enough to get a puppy for Adele and he would probably think Adele would not take care of it - but then again almost everything is off about Colin Clive’s Rochester. When Rochester returns from a trip away, he comes bearing gifts and he gives Adele a puppy. I am a stickler for faithful adaptations, but for this post I’m ranking the top 10 invented scenes from Jane Eyre adaptations. Sometimes, only because I just really enjoyed that new way of looking at the scene or the characters.

And while there have been quite a few invented scenes in adaptations that aren’t true to the overall vision of the novel, there have been some that I feel enhance it. I generally think that the best thing to do when adapting a book is to stick to the scenes in the book, but I know that with a different medium, there must be changes to the way the story is told and sometimes adding a new scene can help the visual better than the way the book describes it.
